Psychosexual Nursing

The focus on this book is on helping practitioners recognize and respond appropriately to psychosexual anxiety and distress. Recent research suggests that the sexual concerns of patients still go unaddressed and that communication with patients about sexual issues is generally inadequate. Psychosexual anxiety and distress occur as the consequence of changes or threats to the sexual aspects of an individual?s self-confidence. Such changes may occur as the consequence of illness, disability, ageing, altered sexual function, relationship difficulties, loss and other psychosocial events. Sexual distress and anxieties that go unrecognized may lead to sexual and interpersonal problems which in turn create further anxiety or distress. As a consequence, a vicious circle of altered sexual self-concept, psychosexual anxiety and distress, and alterations in sexual response and satisfacction, can become quickly established. This book gives a thorough grounding in the principles of the care of patients with psychosexual problem. Psychosexual anxiety and distress ? Professional issues in psychosexual care ? Psychosexual nursing skills ? Altered sexual interest and response ? Sexual dysfunction ? Reproductive sexual health ? Sexual orientation ? Sexually transmitted infections ? Sexual assult and sexual abuse ? Sexual variations and issues relating to gender identity ? Useful addresses ?

Anatomy and Physiology

Anatomy and Physiology is designed to help students develop a solid understanding of the concepts of anatomy and physiology and to use this knowledge to solve problems. This is accomplished via a carefully planned learning system that serves as the framework for virtually all the elements in the text. From the opening chapter previews to the end-of-chapter multi-level review questions, Anatomy and Physiology is the textbook that will motivate and teach your students who are going into health-related careers.  Anatomy and Physiology is written for the two-semester anatomy and physiology course. Clear descriptions and exceptional illustrations combine to help students develop a solid understanding of the concepts of anatomy and physiology and to also teach them how to use that information. It begins with the micrograph on the chapter-opening page, carefully chosen to pique interest and bring into focus a close-up view of the subject at hand. Accompanying text previews the material to come and even includes a mini-review, complete with relevant page numbers. Once into the core of the chapter, students will benefit from an abundance of clinical content, step-by-step Process Figures, in-chapter Review and Predict Questions, macro-to- micro art, unique Homeostasis Summary Figures, cadaver images, and more. A Chapter Summary provided in outline form covers all the main points of the chapter and serves as an excellent study guide. Finally, the Review and Comprehension Questions, and the Critical Thinking Questions, based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, allow students to test their understanding in stages of comprehension.

Diabetes and You: A Comprehensive, Holistic Approach

In this well-organized guidebook, physician Ali gives diabetics and their families understandable information about an increasingly common and ultimately debilitating disease. More than 23 million people suffer from diabetes in the U.S. alone. Ali expertly covers the causes, treatment, and early and later symptoms. (The first signs are excessive thirst, urination, and appetite. Later, people can suffer from erectile dysfunction, acne, headaches, and cramps.) Ali also explains the disease’s mind-boggling alphabet-acronym soup: BMI, SMBG, DCCT, NP, DKA. Rather than blaming type 2 diabetics for sufferers’ condition, which is often brought on by obesity, Ali tries to motivate them to exercise and lose weight. He also includes a thorough glossary (whoever heard of Goodpasture’s syndrome?) and several pages with contact information for research groups, diabetes centers and clinics, and other resources. His advice isn’t always earthshaking; learn portion size, keep a food diary, eat more fruits and vegetables, quit smoking. But it may be lifesaving. --Karen Springen

Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function - 8th Edition

Human Physiology is a text designed to teach the functions of the human body from a mechanistic approach, stressing homeostasis and control systems. The fundamental purpose of this book has remained undeniably the same: to present the principles and facts of human physiology in a format that is suitable for undergraduates regardless of academic background or field of study. Human Physiology, eighth edition, carries on the tradition of clarity and accuracy, while refining and updating the content to meet the needs of today's instructors and students.
Mechanistic approach. Physiology is explained as a dynamic process of clearly defined chains of causal links. This approach prevents students from viewing physiology as a memorizing exercise -- students must understand causal links and processes within the context of homeostasis. This mirrors the experience they will have in the clinical setting.
Chapter Sections. Most text chapters are broken down into sections which contain their own pedagogy: key words, summaries, review questions, thought questions. Gives more pedagogical support to individual topics within chapters. Breaks information into smaller functional "chunks" which are better grasped by students.
Reviewer: *****
A very clear and concise text book with plenty of information without being too difficult to get your head around. Quality colour pictures along with easy to read text make it a very user friendly study assistant.

Bones and Muscles: An Illustrated Anatomy

Bones and Muscles: An Illustrated Anatomy is 187 pages long with 144 full-color illustrations. It is the first anatomy textbook available only in ebook format. It can be downloaded in whole or in part as a PDF file, or ordered as a CD at a fraction of the cost of a typical medical textbook.

Bones and Muscles focuses on only one aspect of the human body--the origins and insertions of the voluntary muscles. The format is simple and uncluttered, with drawings on the right and text--including actions, origins and insertions of the muscles--on the left. Translations of the names of the bones and muscles from the Latin and Greek are provided.

The author and illustrator, Virginia Cantarella, is a renowned medical illustrator with 20 major medical texts to her credit, including the classic Aesthetic Plastic Surgery by Thomas Rees, M.D.

Here is what Rees has to say about Bones and Muscles:

"The study of anatomy is innately difficult because of the built in "dryness" of the subject. The mental exercise required to memorize the details is a boring task at best. In medical school, I found the study of Gray's Anatomy to be tedious beyond words. The illustrations were not appealing.

"This new work by Virginia Cantarella is a delight to the eye and makes the study of anatomy a pleasure... She has married accuracy of detail with art - a most difficult task. I was lucky enough to have Ms Cantarella's services in illustrating two editions of my texts AESTHETIC PLASTIC SURGERY, of which I was the editor and author. The clarity and appeal of her illustrations of surgical anatomy contributed much to the success of these books which drew compliments from plastic surgeons from all over the World.

"I have found these anatomical plates and their accompanying text to be a delight to the eye and the mind. The anatomy is almost incidental to the art. I believe this work will become the classic by which all future texts on anatomy will be measured. The work is useful for all workers in the field of health care whether a surgeon, nurse, paramedic, rehabilitation specialist, or other health provider."

--Thomas D. Rees, M.D., F.A.C.S.

"Congratulations on a fine book. I'm impressed. I recommend it highly for surgeons, chiropractors and and massage therapists."

System of Orthopedics and Fractures

Since the publication of the first edition in 1959, Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures has been an essential textbook for those seeking to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, its diseases and its response to trauma. The book's success was initiated by the late Alan Apley's skills as a teacher, and the care and forethought that he brought to the presentation of the content.
The current authors have developed and extended this foundation to produce a thoroughly modern textbook of orthopaedic surgery, bringing complementary expertise while retaining the book's characteristic philosophy and approach. They are joined by a selection of expert contributors from around the world, who add material on a wide variety of subjects including radiology, open fractures, neuromuscular disorders, and inflammatory arthropathies.

Encyclopedia of the Heart and Heart Disease, 2 edition

This title is an excellent addition to the Facts On File Library of Health and Living providing a brief foundation for laypersons to understand health and disease of the heart. As heart disease is the cause of more than one-third of all deaths in this country, the title is a must in most libraries. It provides easy-to-understand information on symptoms, treatments, and causes.

More than 900 entries cover prescription and nonprescription drugs used for heart health, important figures in heart research, and illnesses of the heart and surrounding areas. There are articles on smoking, alcohol, physical fitness, biofeedback, nutrition, and other human activities that affect heart health. Articles on eating disorders, diabetes, AIDS, and stroke discuss the effect various conditions and illnesses have on the heart. People from Rene Laennec, inventor of the stethoscope, to Robert Jarvik, inventor of the artificial heart, are profiled.

Articles are brief, and medical terminology is either explained thoroughly or simplified to increase understanding by the lay reader. Cross-references and see also references are used liberally to direct the reader to appropriate articles. Appendixes provide a list of organizations, common abbreviations, and a series of diagrams from the publisher's Human Body on File: Physiology. The bibliography is divided into clinical texts, books for general readers, and articles. Overall, this title adds to the well-received series and stands on its own as a solid tool for consumer medical collections. Steve Stratton

Dermatopathology The Basics

In this volume, the authors hope to share their passion for the

teaching of dermatopathology with a wide range of students.

The idea for the project was initiated by a group of dermatology

residents trained during the past 20 years. As part of a

dermatopathology curriculum within the Dermatology and Pathology

departments, Drs. Smoller and Hiatt have developed a series

of didactic lectures covering much of the field. Annually, the residents

ask for “hard copies” of the lecture notes and use these

to create binders to be used for studying. At their constant urging,

we decided to share these lectures in the form of a series of

monographs—the first volume of which is presented here.

Psychological Aspects of Women's Health Care: The Interface Between Psychiatry and Obstetrics and Gynecology

In the decade since the first edition of this work was published, an incredible array of reproductive technologies and associated issues has emerged. Obstetricians and gynecologists are hard-pressed to deal with the startling breadth and depth of these issues, which require mastery over a daunting combination of ever-increasing scientific knowledge, technical skills, long hours, legal liability, and exposure to clinical situations of overwhelming emotional intensity.

Psychiatrists have a vital role to play in helping obstetricians and gynecologists cope with a host of problems whose resolutions require not just technical skill, but also knowledge of biology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, ethics, and law. For example, to design and implement strategies to reduce the transmission of HIV, psychiatrists could work with public health workers to incorporate the psychology, sociology, and anthropology of female reproductive behavior. Psychiatrists could likewise improve the diagnosis and treatment of breast and pelvic malignancies by elucidating the factors that deter women from self-examination and regular medical screening and enhance treatment compliance.

Divided into three sections, this clinical and theoretical sourcebook addresses every major area of contemporary concern.
Pregnancy covers topics from the psychology of normal gestation to physical and psychiatric complications during and after pregnancy, including new prenatal diagnostic techniques and the dynamic issues that emerge when abnormalities are detected, and the use of psychotropic drugs and electroconvulsive therapy in pregnant and lactating patients.
Gynecology discusses not only common gynecologic problems but also more controversial issues such as induced abortion and the new reproductive technologies, including the role of the menstrual cycle in exacerbating and precipitating psychologic symptoms, the psychiatric aspects of menopause, the assessment and management of chronic pelvic pain, the psychosocial concomitants of gynecologic malignancies and the emotional demands on the oncology team, and the special implications of HIV/AIDS.
General Issues offers a broad, balanced view of topics rarely found in the literature, such as men's reactions to women's reproductive events, substance abuse and eating disorders, sexual and physical abuse (often part of the histories of patients with personality disorders and posttraumatic stress disorders), ethical and legal issues, and health care for lesbian patients. Of special significance is Dr. Stotland's chapter on how consultation-liaison services are provided to obstetrics and gynecology services.

This practical and scholarly volume is exceptionally useful as a teaching reference for medical and other health care students and residents in psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology. It also provides a valuable resource for the clinician working to improve the psychological well-being of women patients.

Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring: Principles and Practice

Unlike many other diagnostic procedures, EEG, now over 80 years old, and epilepsy monitoring, now over 40 years old, have demonstrated their usefulness and stood the test of time. Although the benefits of these diagnostic procedures are clear, monitoring is currently not available to the majority of patients in need. One of the factors limiting broader implementation is the lack of practitioners with special expertise.
Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring was developed to address this concern. This practical volume contains detailed chapters covering all areas of clinical epilepsy monitoring. Featuring expert authors from major epilepsy centers, this seminal work reviews all current procedures and applications for monitoring adults and children with epilepsy in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and the ICU

Monitoring in Medical Practice - Basic Medical Skills

The “Basic Medical Skills course at the Institute of Surgical Research is designed to teach monitoring skills. By definition, monitoring is the continuous or repeated, regular observation of a chosen characteristic of an object at con- stant sites by standardized methods. In medicine, monitoring may be defined as the interpretation of all collected and available clinical data in order to help with the recognition of present or future mishaps or unfavorable system condi- tions in time. In this sense, a cross-section of vital data should be obtained and analyzed in each case; accordingly the technique and methodology (the “skills  of the analyzer are critical. Further important goals of the course are to foster skills-based knowledge and to broaden the correlation of physiology and anatomy to cover acute clinical care. In line with this, we utilize a student-oriented teaching methodology which is strongly based on self-education. Emphasis is placed on procedures, critical thinking and assessment of skills to support a career choice in those medical specialties in which decision-making or “problem-solving is critical. The themes of the course are organized into modules. These curricular structures are used to summarize the back- ground knowledge and to provide practical expertise on current monitoring possibilities relating to separate, well-defined organ systems. In this scheme, new scientific and medical findings relevant to medical practice can easily be inserted and thus the borders of the individual blocks can be simply expanded and updated. The goals for a successful module are efficient student learning (at the same time covering a deeper content) and efficient faculty effort (no increase in work load resulting from use of the new instructional materials). The topics, principles and practice of monitoring are taught in the skills laboratory and in the students operating theater at the Institute of Surgical Research in a simulated, life-like environment with best-practice medical technology, where the basic monitoring techniques and advanced interventions targeting the main organ systems can be practised in a secure surrounding.
