6.       Professional NOSQL

THE GROWTH OF USER-DRIVEN CONTENT has fueled a rapid increase in the volume and type of data that is generated, manipulated, analyzed, and archived. In addition, varied newer sets of sources, including sensors, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), automated trackers and monitoring systems, are generating a lot of data. These larger volumes of data sets, often termed big data, are imposing newer challenges and opportunities around storage, analysis, and archival. In parallel to the fast data growth, data is also becoming increasingly semi-structured and sparse. This means the traditional data management techniques around upfront schema defi nition and relational references is also being questioned. The quest to solve the problems related to large-volume and semi-structured data has led to the emergence of a class of newer types of database products. This new class of database products consists of column-oriented data stores, key/value pair databases, and document databases. Collectively, these are identifi ed as NoSQL. The products that fall under the NoSQL umbrella are quite varied, each with their unique sets of features and value propositions. Given this, it often becomes diffi cult to decide which product to use for the case at hand. This book prepares you to understand the entire NoSQL landscape. It provides the essential concepts that act as the building blocks for many of the NoSQL products. Instead of covering a single product exhaustively, it provides a fair coverage of a number of different NoSQL products. The emphasis is often on breadth and underlying concepts rather than a full coverage of every product API. Because a number of NoSQL products are covered, a good bit of comparative analysis is also included. If you are unsure where to start with NoSQL and how to learn to manage and analyze big data, then you will fi nd this book to be a good introduction and a useful reference to the topic.

WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR

Developers, architects, database administrators, and technical project managers are the primary audience of this book. However, anyone savvy enough to understand database technologies is likely to fi nd it useful. The subject of big data and NoSQL is of interest to a number of computer science students and researchers as well. Such students and researchers could benefi t from reading this book. Anyone starting out with big data analysis and NoSQL will gain from reading this book. This e-book contains 386 pages

10.  Sams Teach Yourself Adobe InDesign 1.5 in 24 Hours Book

Sams Teach Yourself Adobe InDesign 1.5 in 24 Hours addresses each feature of Adobe's InDesign 1.5 in a proven tutorial method. The uniqueness of this book stems from the author's in-depth knowledge of the print industry. This book focuses on using InDesign in a professional environment rather than to produce simple documents at home or in a small office. Sams Teach Yourself InDesign in 24 Hours speaks to design professionals who need thorough expert tips, solid information on pre-press and PDF, and specialized advice on how to deploy InDesign in a PageMaker and/or Quark environment. This book is intended for everyone: from beginners who have never created a single layout, to intermediate level graphic artists looking to learn a new software package. Although this book covers some basic concepts of “electronic publishing,” the focus is on learning the software quickly. Stepping through each lesson, beginners will learn basic design concepts while learning the software, whereas the accomplished artist can quickly learn by example how to use the tools.

How This Book Is Organized

• Part I, “Getting Started with Adobe InDesign” (Hours 1–5), pretty much, as you would expect, starts at the beginning. What are the tools that InDesign puts at your disposal? How are the menus organized? What do the palettes do? How do you go about creating a new document? How do you create and manage pages?

 • Part II, “Working with Text” (Hours 6–8), explores the wealth of typesetting tools that InDesign has given would-be (and will-be) typesetters. How are fonts and type sizes applied? How does InDesign let you create great-looking type?

 • Part III, “Working with Graphics” (Hours 9–12), kicks it up a notch, to coin a phrase. In this section, you’ll learn how to create your own graphics using InDesign’s extensive array of professional drawing tools. You’ll also learn how to import graphic files that were created with other programs, and how text and graphics work together to make pages dynamic.

 • Part IV, “Working with Color” (Hours 13–16), begins with simply applying colors to objects and continues through the more crucial considerations of professional color output. What is CMYK? What is RGB? Should you do your own trapping? You’ll also be able to answer that age-old question, “Why doesn’t my printed output match what I see on the screen?”

 • Part V, “InDesign Output” (Hours 17–21), What goes in must come out—and here is where you’ll explore all the things you can do with your InDesign documents, from setting up a desktop printer, to preparing files for service bureau output. You’ll also learn how to export your files as PDFs, and even how to repurpose your pages as Web pages. 2 Sams Teach Yourself Adobe InDesign 1.5 in 24 Hours

 • Part VI, “Advanced InDesign” (Hours 22–24), takes InDesign outside the box, so to speak. How can you customize InDesign so that it provides a comfortable work environment? How can you share files and resources with others in workgroups? How does InDesign function in a cross-platform environment? This e-book contains 492 pages

From the Author: How to Get Your First Major SEO Client

I have worked with many of the webʼs most popular websites as an SEO consultant, and each of them shared one infuriating trait. While their SEO problems were not that difficult, the process of getting them to hire me was.

Before I can explain how I overcame this barrier, let me set the context. Large clients generally suffer from many or all of the same difficulties:

• The potential major client’s website scaled quickly but without SEO in mind. This makes going back and working with a legacy Content Management System (CMS) very difficult.
• The amount of inbound links is no longer a problem, but optimally passing the value of those links throughout the site is a problem.
• The production of content is no longer a problem, but that same content being duplicated across multiple URLs is massively devaluing that same content’s value.
• Big organizations generally have very big websites. While the raw materials for a search engine optimized site are there, the information architecture is not.

So how do you use this knowledge to get your first major SEO client? The answer is to create solutions to these problems before the potential client even identifies they exist and then sell your services to them in the correct way. Once you have done that, offer your solutions at a cheaper than market price (for your first major client only!) and make it clear you have the follow through necessary to guide these changes through their companies structure.

That sounds good but how do I establish myself as a trusted source? That is exactly the correct question! Larger companies usually need hard data in order to make these decisions. This means you will need appropriate case studies. Case studies pay dividends so always be sure to create them after working with noteworthy clients. (I even recommend doing this in exchange for a lower price, if necessary.) Since in this scenario, you haven’t already had a major client in the past, the best case study isn’t really a case study at all. Use the potential clients site as an “in progress case study” and cite actual problems that exist on their site today and show them the results your previous (although smaller) clients got in the past. Back this up with inside information on how others have seen similar results at other major websites. The most cost effective way to get that evidence is to take other SEOs who already worked with major clients out to lunch or coffee in exchange for examples and anecdotes they experienced with past clients. This will both help you become more knowledge and improve your ability to sell yourself.

This combination of pre-identifying the potential major clients’ problems, reassuring them that you have the stamina to push the changes through their company structure, demonstrating the type of results they will likely receive from working with you and basing all of that on case studies and actual examples make up the system you need to get your first big SEO client. While this should get you the results you need, more details are available in this book, Search Engine Optimization Secrets, in case you need more detailed instructions. This system has worked for me and it has worked for others. This e-book contains 537 pages

35.    The Code Book: How to Make It, Break It, Hack It, Crack It

Calling upon accounts of political intrigue and tales of life and death, author Simon Singh tells history’s most fascinating story of deception and cunning: the science of cryptography–the encoding and decoding of private information. Based on The Code Book: The Science of Secrecy from Ancient Egypt to Quantum Cryptography, this version has been abridged and slightly simplified for a younger audience. None of the appeal for curious problem-solving minds has been lost, though. From Julius Caesar to the 10th-century Arabs; from Mary Queen of Scots to “Alice and Bob”; from the Germans’ Enigma machine to the Navajo code talkers in World War II, Singh traces the use of code to protect–and betray–secrecy. Moving right into the present, he describes how the Information Age has provided a whole new set of challenges for cryptographers. How private are your e-mail communications? How secure is sending your credit card information over the Internet? And how much secrecy will the government tolerate? Complex but highly accessible, The Code Book will make readers see the past–and the future–in a whole new light. (Ages 14 and older). This e-book contains 273 pages.

Modern Cryptography: Theory and Practice

Appropriate for all graduate-level and advanced undergraduate courses in cryptography and related mathematical fields. Modern Cryptography is an indispensable resource for every advanced student of cryptography who intends to implement strong security in real-world applications. Leading HP security expert Wenbo Mao explains why conventional crypto schemes, protocols, and systems are profoundly vulnerable, introducing both fundamental theory and real-world attacks. Next, he shows how to implement crypto systems that are truly "fit for application," and formally demonstrate their fitness. He begins by reviewing the foundations of cryptography: probability, information theory, computational complexity, number theory, algebraic techniques, and more. He presents the "ideal" principles of authentication, comparing them with real-world implementation. Mao assesses the strength of IPSec, IKE, SSH, SSL, TLS, Kerberos, and other standards, and offers practical guidance on designing stronger crypto schemes and using formal methods to prove their security and efficiency. Finally, he presents an in-depth introduction to zero-knowledge protocols: their characteristics, development, arguments, and proofs. Mao relies on practical examples throughout, and provides all the mathematical background students will need. This e-book contains 755 pages.

How Computers Work: Processor and Main Memory Book

The book is as simple as possible and aimed at a non-technical audience with absolutely no knowledge of computers or electronics, but it is an electrical engineering text. A typical page consists of a circuit diagram (or program) and a paragraph or two of explanation. The book begins with a VERY simple circuit and continues to a very complex circuit (a computer) while explaining everything. Everything has been made as simple as possible while leaving nothing out. Eighty-four circuit diagrams and some timing diagrams and short programs make every point clear.
Computers are the most complex machines that have ever been created. This is the first book to make it possible for ordinary people to understand precisely how the processor, the main and most complex part of a computer, works. In fact, it completely explains the operation of a complete, though simple, computer.
Relays, which are explained, are used in the circuitry instead of transistors for simplicity, though transistors are mentioned.
Did you ever wonder what a bit, a latch, a word (of memory), a data bus, an address bus, a memory, a register, a processor, a timing diagram, a clock (of a processor), an instruction, or machine code is? Though most explanations of how computers work are a lot of analogies or require a background in electrical engineering, this book will tell you precisely what each of them is and how each of them works without requiring any previous knowledge of computers or electronics. This e-book contains 152 pages.

Java Internationalization (Java Series)

For any Java programmer or manager creating software for global markets, Java Internationalisation is an essential guide to the dos and don'ts of writing software that's usable all around the world. Besides a guide to internationalisation (and its flip side, localisation) generally, this book provides in-depth coverage of support for globalised software on the Java platform.
It makes sense that software should move easily between international markets in today's global economy. Java Internationalisation is first and foremost a guide to the issues surrounding writing software for different languages. The first sections examine a truly fascinating sample of the world's character sets and salient features for outputting characters in software.

Then there is a thorough description of techniques and issues surrounding the creation of software in different languages. Java's built-in support for locales (best described as geographical and language communities) comes later in the book. The authors show how to format text (and dates) for different markets using built-in Java APIs and features (like resource bundles). Short sections on internationalising Web sites powered by Java (whether with servlets or JSPs) offer some valuable insight. The book concludes with a roadmap for the future evolution of Java 3.0 internationalisation, plus a really handy listing of all Java APIs that have been designed with international support in mind.

In all, Java Internationalisation does justice to an intriguing area of Java development, one that is sure to be increasingly important as more and more software is extended to new global markets. Suitable for anyone who designs or manages Java software, this concise volume cuts straight to the chase and is a worthwhile and timely guide to how to get Java applications to new markets fast. Algorithms and Data Structures

This book starts with a chapter on data structure for two reasons. First, one has an intuitive feeling that data precede algorithms: you must have some objects before you can perform operations on them. Second, and this is the more immediate reason, this book assumes that the reader is familiar with the basic notions of computer programming. Traditionally and sensibly, however, introductory programming courses concentrate on algorithms operating on relatively simple structures of data. Hence, an introductory chapter on data structures seems appropriate

Algorithmics: Theory and Practice

Our book is neither a programming manual nor an account of the proper use of data structures. Still less is it a "cookbook" containing a long catalogue of programs ready to be used directly on a machine to solve certain specific problems, but giving at best a vague idea of the principles involved in their design. On the contrary, the aim of our book is to give the reader some basic tools needed to develop his or her own algorithms, in whatever field of application they may be required.

Thus we concentrate on the techniques used to design and analyse efficient algorithms. Each technique is first presented in full generality. Thereafter it is illustrated by concrete examples of algorithms taken from such different applications as optimization, linear algebra, cryptography, operations research, symbolic computation, artificial intelligence, numerical analysis, computing in the humanities, and so on. Although our approach is rigorous and theoretical, we do not neglect the needs of practitioners: besides illustrating the design techniques employed, most of the algorithms presented also have real-life applications.

To profit fully from this book, you should have some previous programming experience. However, we use no particular programming language, nor are the examples for any particular machine. This and the general, fundamental treatment of the material ensure that the ideas presented here will not lose their relevance. On the other hand, you should not expect to be able to use the algorithms we give directly: you will always be obliged to make the necessary effort to transcribe them into some appropriate programming language. The use of Pascal or similarly structured language will help reduce this effort to the minimum necessary.

Some basic mathematical knowledge is required to understand this book. Generally speaking, an introductory undergraduate course in algebra and another in calculus should provide sufficient background. A certain mathematical maturity is more important still. We take it for granted that the reader is familiar with such notions as mathematical induction, set notation, and the concept of a graph. From time to time a passage requires more advanced mathematical knowledge, but such passages can be skipped on the first reading with no loss of continuity.

Yet computer science is much more than this. In turn, beginning computer science students need exposure to the breadth of the subject in which they are planning to major. Providing this exposure is the theme of this book. It gives students an overview of computer science-a foundation from which they can appreciate the relevance and interrelationships of future courses in the field. This survey approach is, in fact, the model used for introductory courses in the natural sciences.

While there are so many consumers that are interested in upgrading their Windows computers, to the newer Windows Vista or Windows 7 software, there are many of us who actually don't even know how to operate their computers with the Windows XP operating system. This book is for those who just want a fast setup, when they don't actually have the time. The Windows XP Just The Steps for Dummies, is from the dummies book series. This edition is a short breakdown of ow simple it is to setup and operate Windows XP. Although there are several features that actually handle well, it unfortunately misses out for being a more comprehensive reflection on how to operate on certain features more vividly like Windows Media Player, and how to make sure your earlier Windows programs that aren't as comprehensive on working with XP, that can be allowed as a loophole. All in all, I really recommend for all the basic Windows XP For Dummies 2nd Edition instead. It is a much better book, that gives a more definitive reflection for all Windows computer owners.

Combinatorial Algorithms: For Computers and Calculators

This book can be read at several levels. Those whose only need is to use one of the computer programs can turn immediately to those pages and satisfy their wants. Thus, on one level, this is a collection of subroutines, in FORTRAN, for the solution of combinatorial problems. At the other extreme, pure mathematicians with no need of computer programs will find much that is new and hopefully interesting in these pages.

Readers will want to follow the entire road from general mathematics to particular mathematics to informal algorithm to formal algorithm to computer program and back again, which occurs in virtually every chapter of the book.
Readers will view methods and programs as a beginning set of building blocks for their own kit of tools and will go on to add to these tools to meet their own needs, so that the contents of this book will be not a collection of pretty artifacts to be looked at but basic elements of the growing and working equipment of scientific investigation and learning.

Java Programming Fundamentals: Problem Solving Through Object Oriented Analysis and Design

While Java texts are plentiful, its difficult to find one that takes a real-world approach, and encourages novice programmers to build on their Java skills through practical exercise. Written by an expert with 19 experience teaching computer programming, Java Programming Fundamentals presents object-oriented programming by employing examples taken from everyday life.

Provides a foundation in object-oriented design principles and UML notation
Describes common pitfalls and good programming practices
Furnishes supplemental links, documents, and programs on its companion website, www.premnair.net
Uses day-to-day life examples to introduce every object-oriented and programming concept
Includes an extensive stand-alone chapter on GUI and event programming
Contains numerous examples, self-check questions, quick review material and an extensive list of both programming and non-programming exercises

The text presents object-oriented design and programming principles in a completely integrated and incremental fashion. It correlates each concept to a real-world application example and then introduces the corresponding Java language construct. The approach continues throughout the book, in that every concept is first introduced through practical examples, followed by short programming tutorials. To round out its coverage, the book provides several case studies, which illustrate various design issues and demonstrate the usefulness of techniques presented throughout the book.

Using its one-of-a-kind approach, Java Programming Fundamentals demonstrates the object-oriented design techniques required to simulate actual real-life situations without compromising study of traditional programming constructs and structures.

How to Design Programs: An Introduction to Programming and Computing

This introduction to programming places computer science in the core of a liberal arts education. Unlike other introductory books, it focuses on the program design process. This approach fosters a variety of skills--critical reading, analytical thinking, creative synthesis, and attention to detail--that are important for everyone, not just future computer programmers. The book exposes readers to two fundamentally new ideas. First, it presents program design guidelines that show the reader how to analyze a problem statement; how to formulate concise goals; how to make up examples; how to develop an outline of the solution, based on the analysis; how to finish the program; and how to test. Each step produces a well-defined intermediate product. Second, the book comes with a novel programming environment, the first one explicitly designed for beginners. The environment grows with the readers as they master the material in the book until it supports a full-fledged language for the whole spectrum of programming tasks. All the book's support materials are available for free on the Web. The Web site includes the environment, teacher guides, exercises for all levels, solutions, and additional projects.

Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in Java, 3rd Edition

Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in Java is an advanced algorithms book that fits between traditional CS2 and Algorithms Analysis courses. In the old ACM Curriculum Guidelines, this course was known as CS7. This text is for readers who want to learn good programming and algorithm analysis skills simultaneously so that they can develop such programs with the maximum amount of efficiency. Readers should have some knowledge of intermediate programming, including topics as object-based programming and recursion, and some background in discrete math.

As the speed and power of computers increases, so does the need for effective programming and algorithm analysis. By approaching these skills in tandem, Mark Allen Weiss teaches readers to develop well-constructed, maximally efficient programs in Java.

Weiss clearly explains topics from binary heaps to sorting to NP-completeness, and dedicates a full chapter to amortized analysis and advanced data structures and their implementation. Figures and examples illustrating successive stages of algorithms contribute to Weiss careful, rigorous and in-depth analysis of each type of algorithm. A logical organization of topics and full access to source code complement the texts coverage.

Introduction to Cryptography: Principles and Applications, Second edition

Due to the rapid growth of digital communication and electronic data exchange, information security has become a crucial issue in industry, business, and administration. Modern cryptography provides essential techniques for securing information and protecting data.

In the first part, this book covers the key concepts of cryptography on an undergraduate level, from encryption and digital signatures to cryptographic protocols. Essential techniques are demonstrated in protocols for key exchange, user identification, electronic elections and digital cash. In the second part, more advanced topics are addressed, such as the bit security of one-way functions and computationally perfect pseudorandom bit generators. The security of cryptographic schemes is a central topic. Typical examples of provably secure encryption and signature schemes and their security proofs are given. Though particular attention is given to the mathematical foundations, no special background in mathematics is presumed. The necessary algebra, number theory and probability theory are included in the appendix. Each chapter closes with a collection of exercises.

The second edition contains corrections, revisions and new material, including a complete description of the AES, an extended section on cryptographic hash functions, a new section on random oracle proofs, and a new section on public-key encryption schemes that are provably secure against adaptively-chosen-ciphertext attacks.

C# in a Nutshell

C# in a Nutshell provides C# programmers with a concise and thorough reference to the language in one straightforward and accessible volume. Designed as a handbook for daily use, this book is an essential guide to the C# language and the base class APIs of the .NET Framework. Programmers will want to keep this book next to their keyboards for years to come. The heart of the book is a succinct but detailed reference to the C# language and the .NET types most essential to C# programmers. Each chapter in the API reference begins with an overview of a .NET namespace and a diagram of its types, including a quick-reference entry for each type, with name, assembly, category, description, member availability, class hierarchy, and other relevant information, such as whether the type is part o the ECMA CLI specification. Newly updated for .NET Framework version 1.1, the second edition also adds a CD that allows you to integrate the book's API Quick Reference directly into the help files of Visual Studio .NET 2002 & 2003, giving you direct access to this valuable information via your computer. In addition to the API reference section, this book includes:

* An accelerated introduction to the C# language and the .NET Common Language Runtime
* A tutorial section on using C# with the core classes of the .NET Framework Class Library to perform common tasks such as manipulating strings, I/O, and interacting with legacy components
* Comprehensive language and tool reference chapters, including a C# syntax summary, a list of XML documentation tags, and a guide to command-line tools that ship with Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework
* Appendixes with reference tables for regular expression syntax, format specifiers, a C# keyword glossary, namespace/assembly cross-reference, and a type and member index for determining in which type a method or field is defined.

Every once in a while, a book becomes the de-facto standard for a technology, operating system, or programming language--which is exactly what C# in a Nutshell has done in a single straightforward and easy to use volume. There is no more complete, up-to-date reference to the C# Language available.

Android Application Development

This book, read carefully, can enable any Java programmer to develop useful and robust applications for Android. It also takes you into the internals in some places, so you know how Android supports what you’re doing and so you can play around with its open source code if you like(ISBN-13: 9780596521479).

When Google announced the development of Android, the field of mobile platforms was already well established. Even in the narrower category of open source platforms, a number of viable alternatives were being pushed by proponents. Yet Android has stimulated not only widespread technical interest but rampant speculation about its potential to completely transform the world of the personal device. Instead of a convenient prop to support a set of familiar functions, such as phone calls, email, and restaurant lookups, the electronic device could become an open-ended window into the whole world could become, in short, anything that the user and the developer could think to make it.
