Face Reader: Discover Anyone's Personality, Compatibility, Talents, and Challenges Through Chinese Face Reading

What if you could learn powerful insights into a person just by seeing his or her face? For 2,500 years, the science of Mien Shiang (pronounced myen-shung), or Chinese face reading, has given anyone who studies its form this incredible ability.

Whether working with executives from Fortune 500 firms or readying the nation’s top attorneys to choose the ideal juries for their clients, Patrician McCarthy has built a reputation for her ability to help others determine a person’s personality, potential, and inherent talents by analyzing his or her facial structure and features. Now McCarthy shares her understanding of this ancient knowledge with readers everywhere.

Literally meaning face (mien) reading (shiang), mien shiang is a powerful means of both self-discovery and a way to understand others. Taoist ancients said, the face is a mirror that records your past, reflects your present, and forecasts your future. McCarthy introduces five essential influences in our lives revealed by the face and enables you to interpret and understand these influences. With the practice of Mien Shiang, you will live in a harmony of mind, body, and spirit.

Love as Passion: The Codification of Intimacy

Niklas Luhmann is one of the greatest of contemporary social theorists, and his ultimate aim is to develop a conceptual vocabulary supple enough to capture what he sees as the unprecedented structural characteristics of society since the eighteenth century. Ours is a society in which individuals can determine their own sense of self and function rather than have that predetermined by the strict hierarchy of former times, and a key element in the modern sense of individuality is our concept of love, marriage, and lasting personal relationships. This book takes us back to when passionate love took place exclusively outside of marriage, and Luhmann shows by lively references to social customs and literature how a language and code of behavior were developed so that notions of love and intimacy could be made the essential components of married life. This intimacy and privacy made possible by a social arrangement in which home is where the heart is provides the basis for a society of individuals--the foundation for the structure of modern life. Love is now declared to be unfathomable and personal, yet we love and suffer--as Luhmann shows--according to cultural imperatives. This e-book looks like Xerox-copy of the book.

Flourishing: Positive Psychology and the Life Well-Lived

Psychology has made great strides in understanding mental illness, but how much has it learned about mental health? When people want to reflect upon the good life and how to live it, they turn to philosophers and novelists, not psychologists. The emerging field of positive psychology aims to redress this imbalance. In Flourishing, distinguished scholars apply scientific analyses to study the good life, expanding the scope of social and psychological research to include happiness, well-being, courage, citizenship, play, and the satisfactions of healthy work and healthy relationships. Their findings reveal that a sense of meaning and a feeling of richness emerge in life as people immerse themselves in activities, relationships, and the pursuit of intrinsically satisfying goals like overcoming adversity or serving one's community through volunteering. This provocative book will further define this evolving field.

Bullying, Suicide, and Homicide: Understanding, Assessing, and Preventing Threats to Self and Others for Victims of Bullying

In our society, bullying is commonly seen as a normal, inescapable part of growing up that children and adolescents must simply endure. In Bullying, Suicide, and Homicide, Butch Losey challenges this viewpoint, arguing that bullying is not a part of childhood development, but rather an aberrant behavior that, for the victim, can lead to adverse decisions, such as suicide and homicide. He provides a detailed understanding of the relationship between bullying, suicide, and homicide and an assessment and response strategy that can be utilized by mental health professionals who work with children and adolescents. This strategy involves a three stage ecological approach: screening to identify warning signs for bullying, depression, suicide, and violence by means of the Bullying Lethality Identification System (BLIS), developed by Losey and a colleague; assessing the risks of suicide and threats of violence using specially tailored forms and tools; and mediating to identify appropriate interventions. All of the associated tools and forms that the author has created are included as appendices and on the accompanying CD. Loseys sensitive and compassionate treatment of this important subject will inform and motivate mental health professionals in their work with victims of bullying.

Brain Fitness: A Proven Program to Improve Your Memory, Logic, Attention Span, Organizational Ability, and More

With age, many of us experience lapses of memory, concentration, and reasoning power. This nonpathological cerebral dysfunction can be prevented or corrected, according to Le Poncin, the founder of a French institute on cerebral aging. While they admit that the program outlined in this book is based on scientific hypotheses, the authors cite experiments which suggest that certain kinds of degeneration can be overcome. A brief explanation of brain mechanisms is followed by a month's worth of practice exercises. Emphasizing speed and diversification, these exercises purport to develop perceptive, logical, verbal, structural, and visual/spatial abilities. After much initial failure and frustration, this reviewer's "efficiency rating" dramatically increased, though whether from simple improvement as a test-taker or actual improvement in mental fitness is unclear. A best seller in Europe, according to the publisher, this self-help book will undoubtedly find an audience among general readers eager to "improve" their minds.

Handbook on the Economics of Happiness

`After many years of neglect, the topic of happiness is returning to the agenda of economics. This wide-ranging collection of papers considers the significance of happiness for economic theory and policy, drawing on ideas from psychology, philosophy and history as well as economics itself. In stressing the importance of sociality as a source of happiness, the authors open up new territory for social science.'
- Robert Sugden, University of East Anglia, UK

This book is a welcome consolidation and extension of the recent expanding debates on happiness and economics. Happiness and economics, as a new field for research, is now of pivotal interest particularly to welfare economists and psychologists.

This Handbook provides an unprecedented forum for discussion of the economic issues relating to happiness. It reviews the more recent literature and offers the interested reader an insight into the vast scope of the field in terms of the theory, its applications and also experimental design. The Handbook also gives substantial indications as to the future direction of research in the field, with particular regard to policy applications and developing an economics of interpersonal relations which includes reciprocity and social interaction theory.

Reflecting the contribution of a major research activity on the study of happiness, economics and interpersonal relations, this book will be of great interest to economists and psychologists in general, as well as welfare economists and postgraduate scholars of cooperation, welfare, social planning, non-profit, corporate social responsibility and related fields.

Self-determined Learning Theory: Construction, Verification, and Evaluation

This volume brings together four semi-autonomous bodies of research (choice, self-determination, self-regulation, and self-management) to form a new theory of self-engaged learning entitled, Self-Determined Learning Theory. This theory explains why and how students self-engage. It identifies the factors that give students the sense of control over their learning that is needed for sustained, adaptive, and ultimately successful learning. It begins by describing the characteristics of disengaged learners, then describes and illustrates self-determined learning theory within both normal and special populations. It then examines the theory's predictive value across several special population contexts and then concludes with a critique of the theory's credibility and worth.
Divided into three sections--theory construction, theory verification, and theory evaluation--this volume is organized using the four steps of a previous book, Learning to Theorize: A Four Step Strategy. Step 1 defines a problem of not understanding something as discrepancy between what is known and not known about a circumstance. Step 2 searches for information and explanations to change the condition of not knowing into a condition of knowing. Step 3 evaluates the credibility and worth of the explanation constructed in Step 2. Step 4 adjusts existing beliefs so they are consistent with the new theory.
Although aimed primarily at leaders in special education, it should also appeal to researchers and scholars in psychology, educational psychology, and school psychology who are interested in the applications of self-regulated learning theory--in this case to special populations.

Personality and Social Behavior

The study of the relationship between the person and the situation has had a long history in psychology. Many theories of personality are set on an interpersonal stage and many social phenomena are played out differently as the cast of characters change. At times the study of persons and situations has been contentious, however, recent interest in process models of personality and social interaction have focused on the ways people navigate, influence, and are influenced by their social worlds.

Personality and Social Behavior contains a series of essays on topics where a transactional analysis of the person and situation has proved most fruitful. Contributions span the personality and social psychology spectrum and include such topics as new units in personality; neuroscience perspectives on interpersonal personality; social and interpersonal frameworks for understanding the self and self-esteem; and personality process analyses of romantic relationships, prejudice, health, and leadership.

This volume provides essential reading for researchers with an interest in this core topic in social psychology and may also be used as a text on related upper-level courses.

Sexual Offenders: Personal Construct Theory and Devian Sexuality

Is there an alternative way of treating sexual offenders beyond traditional psychiatry? Sexual Offenders explores and develops personal construct theory in terms of forensic and social psychology, and examines the possibilities for sexual offender assessment and therapy. Rather than viewing sexual offenders as having a mental illness or possessing a set of pathological personality traits, personal construct theory indicates that all people learn particular ways of understanding their own experience, and use these 'personal constructs' to anticipate the future. Through a variety of experiences, sexual offenders appear to develop a set of constructs that demands a particular understanding of themselves and other people. James Horley suggests that if they desire change sexual offenders can alter these constructs through psychotherapy. Sexual Offenders describes a number of techniques used by the author and other clinicians as well as presenting new and more dynamic approaches to psychological assessment. Based on over 20 years of the author's clinical and research work, this book will provide professionals and students in the field of forensic psychology and psychiatry with an alternative way of treating sex offender clients.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Personality Profiles

The study of personality has fascinated people from the time of the Ancient Greeks. I am pleased to introduce this book, which covers many aspects of personality and change. Authors Allen Miller and Susan Shelly delve into some fairly complex ideas and explain them in everyday language. A recurring theme in the book, along with Dr. Aaron Becks cognitive therapy, is the schema-focused approach to personality. The schema approach recognizes the biological and environmental contributions to personality. It expands upon the research and clinical findings of cognitive-behavior therapy and is consistent with the constructivist view that we create our own realities. The ideas and practices of various theoretical and clinical approaches are integrated into schema-focused therapy.

Feelings: The Perception of Self

This book aims to pinpoint the connection feelings have with behavior a connection that, while clear, has never been fully explained. Following William James, Laird argues that feelings are not the cause of behavior but rather its consequences; the same goes for behavior and motives and behavior and attitudes. He presents research into feelings across the spectrum, from anger to joy to fear to romantic love, that support this against-the-grain view. Laird discusses the problem of common sense, self-perception theory, the association between feelings and higher cognitive processes, and also the literature on facial expression, posture, and gaze.

Maximizing Intelligence – IQ

How much of a role does genetics or environment play in accounting for reasoning skill and other intellectual aptitudes? At a time when the public school system in the United States is under attack, this debate has taken center stage in arguments about what accounts for differences in academic achievement. Maximizing Intelligence convincingly argues that, while both genetics and environment play a role in a child's intelligence, environmental factors, especially at an early age, are of primary importance. Working from this premise, Armor suggests how intelligence may be heightened. Armor presents four propositions about intelligence. His first is that intelligence exerts a major influence on educational and occupational success, following a chronological sequence, from a child's cognitive skills learned before school, to academic success during the school years, to eligibility for college. His second proposition is that intelligence can be changed, at least within limits. There is ample evidence that a child's intelligence is not fully given at birth, but continues to evolve and change at least through the early elementary school years, although at a declining rate. Proposition three is that intelligence is influenced by a series of quot;risk factors, quot; and most of the influence occurs before a child reaches school age. Risk factors include parent intelligence and education, family income, family structure and size, nutrition, and specific parenting behaviors. The fourth proposition flows from the second and third - that the most promising avenues for maximizing intelligence come from a child's parents. Armor persuasively argues for a quot;whole familyquot; approach whereby government programs are modified or created to inform parents of risk factors and to reward behaviors that optimize positive outcomes. Maximizing Intelligence is meticulously researched and reasoned, and will be welcomed by researchers in education, sociology, psychology, social theory, and policy studies.

Beauty and Art: 1750-2000

What do we mean when we call a work of art `beautiful`? How have artists responded to changing notions of the beautiful? Which works of art have been called beautiful, and why? Fundamental and intriguing questions to artists and art lovers, but ones that are all too often ignored in discussions of art today. Prettejohn argues that we simply cannot afford to ignore these questions. Charting over two hundred years of western art, she illuminates the vital relationship between our changing notions of beauty and specific works of art, from the works of Kauffman to Whistler, Ingres to Rossetti, Cezanne to Jackson Pollock, and concludes with a challenging question for the future: why should we care about beauty in the twenty-first century?

World Art History And Its Objects

Is writing a world art history possible? Does the history of art as such even exist outside the Western tradition? Is it possible to consider the history of art in a way that is not fundamentally Eurocentric? In this highly readable and provocative book, David Carrier, a philosopher and art historian, does not attempt to write a world art history himself. Rather, he asks the question of how an art history of all cultures could be written - or whether it is even possible to do so. He also engages the political and moral issues raised by the idea of a multicultural art history. Focusing on a consideration of intersecting artistic traditions, Carrier negotiates the way meaning and understanding shift or are altered when a visual object from one culture, for example, is inserted into the visual tradition of another culture. A World Art History and Its Objects proposes the use of temporal narrative as a way to begin to understand a multicultural art history.

Leonardo da Vinci: The Marvellous Works of Nature and Man

This masterly account of Leonardo da Vinci and his vision of the world has long been recognized as the classic treatment of the Renaissance giant, offering unparalleled insight into Leonardo's intellect and vision at every stage of his artistic career.
Martin Kemp, one of the world's leading authorities on Leonardo, takes us on a mesmerizing journey through the whole span of the great man's life, painting a fully integrated picture of his artistic, scientific, and technological achievements. Kemp shows how Leonardo's early training in Florence provided a crucial foundation in the science of art, particularly perspective and anatomy, while his period in the service of the Sforzas of Milan enlarged his outlook to embrace a wide range of natural sciences and mathematics, as he searched for scientific rules governing both man and the universe. It was these rules, Kemp argues, which provided the basis for his imaginative reconstruction of nature in masterworks such as the Last Supper, The Mona Lisa, and St. John, which reveal his increasingly complex vision of man in the context of nature. And towards the end of his life, Leonardo became fascinated with the mathematics underlying the design of nature, behind which lay the ultimate force of the prime mover, as manifested with supreme power in his Deluge drawings.
Covering every aspect of Leonardo's achievement, generously illustrated, and now including a new introductory chapter setting Leonardo's work in its historical context, this fully updated edition provides unparalleled insight into the mind of this central figure in western art

About the author
Nick Robinson is a professional origami artist, and has been folding paper for 25 years. He has been a member of the British Origami Society for over 20 years, and currently he edits their magazine, as well as maintaining their website.

Summary: an origami classic for all folders
Rating: 5

This is the perfect book to inspire beginners and rekindle the enthusiasm of experts because it is the most thoughtful work on origami that I have ever read. Yes, it includes a packet of origami paper so the beginner can begin immediately on opening the book. The layout of the material is attractive and the writing is welcoming. And there is the required plentitude of excellent models to captivate both the beginner and expert. All that is sufficient for a useful book, but there is much more offered by the author.
Nick Robinson is a creator of original models who understands the creative process and communicates possibilities to the reader. He is an accomplished illustrator who knows what the reader needs to be shown and how to reveal it. Best of all, he has been a teacher of origami over decades and experienced the requirements of instruction. This is far more than a barebones collection of models, however valuable such a lively gathering is. Robinson is both relaxed and serious about the craft, so he takes time to write about how to begin, tips on the process of folding, and a discussion of the different styles of folding that have appeared in this ancient craft. What he communicates is valuable for the beginner and a necessary reminder for the expert.
The book is not quite perfect. The model on the cover is not included in the text. The origami paper is not the usual sheet white on one side and color on the other side, not conforming to the illustrations. Some photographs of the completed models would have been instructive. But these are trivial matters. Robinson is a well-rounded, great teacher so all who seek to be stimulated by this craft, realizing that we are actually and always dummies, will enjoy his Origami Kit For Dummies.
Summary: Great book for beginners, but there's lots for experts too
Rating: 5

I'm generally somewhat sceptical of books describing themselves as for dummies: but after seeing a few people I respect in the origami community speak highly of this book, I decided to purchase a copy. I've been very pleased with the book: as with many of Robinson's books, there's a lot more text than one might expect to see in an origami book, but there are also lots of neat models diagrammed: the text is an unexpected bonus.
And as such, the book works well not just for beginners, but for experienced folders as well: I've recommended it to several people, and will continue to do so.
Summary: A definitive textbook
Rating: 5

Here is a book for anyone who has had a go at origami, and failed. It's a comprehensive guide filled with excellent diagrams, clear text and practical information. It features a variety of new and old models suitable for teachers of origami and the more experienced folder. This is destined to become a classic: a definitive textbook that wears its learning lightly. As such it is a bargain and I award it a richly-deserved five stars.

The Secret Universal Mind Meditation

* Increase your attracting force
* Dissolve limiting beliefs
* Breakthrough to a new level of being

This program takes you deeper into the magic and mystery of the Universal Mind. All the love, abundance and joy you want already exists within you, the secret is in discovering it. Through repeated nightly listening you will move into alignment with Infinite Intelligence. As you attune to the Universal Mind, and surrender personal will to Divine Will, what you need and want comes to you. Manifesting then becomes easy and fun. Many have already discovered this for themselves. Now you can too.

With this program you'll overcome limiting, outmoded beliefs that have hindered your ability to create the life you ve always wanted. While theta and delta waves gently lull you to sleep, The Secret Meditation II re-programs your mind with ideas that unleash your power to create a flourishing life that fulfills you on every level.

How is The Secret Meditation II different?
The same powerful messages are delivered in the second person to reprogram your subconscious mind from another essential perspective. This incarnation of the Secret Meditation goes even deeper into the re-programming process because it s important to hear the truth about who you really are spoken to You.

All the messages are audible and there are no subliminal messages. If you alternate between both versions you ll be astonished by the impact they ll have on your life.

Through nightly listening, your subconscious will accept the knowledge it receives as true. When this happens, what you need and desire comes to you. And there s nothing you need to do except relax and listen. If you fall asleep while listening, that's even better; the messages are still absorbed into your subconscious.

As negative beliefs are replaced with self-empowering truths about your self, you ll start attracting people, ideas and opportunities that support you in making your dreams a reality.

The Secret Universal Mind Meditation II is adapted from the work of U. S. Anderson the original meditations can be found in his book, Three Magic Words.

Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form

The power of the image of the nude the expressivity of the flesh has inspired artists from the beginning. An understanding of human form is essential for artists to be able to express themselves with the figure. Anatomy makes the figure. Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form is the definitive analytical work on the anatomy of the human figure.

No longer will working artists have to search high and low to find the information they need. In this, the most up-to-date and fully illustrated guide available, Eliot Goldfinger sculptor, illustrator, scientific model-maker, and lecturer on anatomy presents a single, all-inclusive reference to human form, capturing everything artists need in one convenient volume. Five years in the making, and featuring hundreds of photos and illustrations, this guide offers more views of each bone and muscle than any other book ever published: every structure that creates or influences surface form is individually illustrated in clear, carefully lit photographs and meticulous drawings. Informed by the detailed study of both live models and cadavers, it includes numerous unique presentations of surface structures such as fat pads, veins, and genitalia and of some muscles never before photographed. In addition, numerous cross sections, made with reference to CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and cut cadavers, trace the forms of all body regions and individual muscles. Information on each structure is placed on facing pages for ease of reference, and the attractive two-color format uses red ink to direct readers rapidly to important points and areas. Finally, an invaluable chapter on the artistic development of basic forms shows in a series of sculptures the evolution of the figure, head, and hands from basic axes and volumes to more complex organic shapes. This feature helps place the details of anatomy within the overall context of the figure.

Certain to become the standard reference in the field, Human Anatomy for Artists will be indispensable to artists and art students, as well as art historians. It will also be a useful aid for physical and dance therapists, athletes and their trainers, bodybuilders, and anyone concerned with the external form of the human body. With the renewed interest in figurative art today, this will be an especially welcome volume. This e-book looks like a Xeroxed copy.

Himalayan Wonderland: Travels in Lahaul and Spiti

In the summer of 1962, a restless young Indian administrator, Manohar Singh Gill, made an arduous journey from the north Indian plains to the farthest reaches of the Indian Himalayas the Lahaul and Spiti valleys and spent a year there, living and working amongst the people. Gill went on to a distinguished career in the civil services and government, but his experience of the relentless beauty of these spectacular Himalayan deserts and the generosity of the people of this land changed him for life. Part memoir, part travel book and part anthropology, Himalayan Wonderland is a witty, opinionated account of Gill s lifelong affair with this extraordinary region. The book, however, is much more than one man s account of a place ... it is a hopeful and enlightening view of the practice of administration and the joy of working with people. Illustrated with more than forty photographs taken by Gill himself, and including detailed contour maps and information on trekking routes in Lahaul and Spiti, this is a remarkably illuminating and accessible account of this faraway land from the 1960s, when few knew about the place, to today s unpredictable world of receding glaciers and lost cultures.

Mental Toughness Training for Sports-Persons

The bestselling author of Mental Toughness Training for Sports uses a practical step-by-step approach that combines mental and physical conditioning with the latest scientific advances in nutrition to create mind-body synergy that will help readers reinforce their immune systems, build energy levels, and toughen themselves up all around.

Drawing upon 16 years of research
and clinical experience, noted sports psychologist Loehr presents a comprehensive training program to convert stress into emotional, mental, and physical toughness. Such toughness is needed to achieve maximum productivity, health, and happiness in life, he claims. According to Loehr, the model in this program is a "quantum leap" beyond that detailed in his previous work, Mental Toughness Training for Sports ( LJ 8/86). Here, he adapts and expands his former model to treat topics such as toughness training for kids, women, the military, and recovering from rough times. Particularly interesting are chapters on the chemistry of toughness and strengthening the immune system. Aided by numerous charts, case studies, exercises, and a glossary, Loehr combines research with readable prose to provide superior stress management advice. Recommended for general psychology collections in public and academic libraries.

Customizing the Body: The Art and Culture of Tattooing

Originally published in 1989, this ground-breaking ethnographic exploration of tattooing - and the art world surrounding it - covers the history, anthropology, and sociology of body modification practices; the occupational experience of the tattooist; the process and social consequences of becoming a tattooed person; and the prospects of serious tattooing becoming an accepted art form. Curiously, despite the greater prevalence of tattoos and body modification in today's society, there is still a stigma of deviance associated with people who get or ink tattoos.Retaining the core of the original book, this revised and expanded edition offers a new preface by the author and a new chapter focusing on the changes that have occurred in the tattoo world. A section on the new scholarly literature that has emerged, as well as the new modes of body modification that have come into vogue, are included along with a new gallery of photographs that show some splendid examples of contemporary tattoo art. A directory of artists' websites invites readers to discover the range of work being done around the world from suits (full body tattoos) to skulls.

100 Years of Fashion Illustration

A visual feast of 400 dazzling images, this is a comprehensive survey of the genre over the last century. The book also offers an overview of the development of fashion, as seen through the eyes of the greatest illustrators of the day. Early in the century fashion illustration reflected new, liberating currents in art and culture, such as the exoticism of the Ballets Russes, while the postwar period saw inspiration from the great Parisian couturiers. After the dominance of the celebrity fashion photographer in the '60s, a new generation of illustrators emerged, embracing the medium of the computer, while many returned to more traditional techniques.

Ultimate Guide to Finding job After Residency

Description:It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. Well, the inspiration for this book was born from my recent experience in trying to find the ideal career for myself upon finishing residency. Like most residents and fellows, I was faced with several career decisions. As a member of over 25,000 medical and surgical  residents graduating each year, I was surprised to find that no single, comprehensive source of information existed to help with career planning after residency. Instead, I found myself asking a lot of folks about their opinions and thoughts, and occasionally came across a few facts. So, once I found my “ideal” career track, I decided to incorporate a lot of those facts, and a few opinions, into what I hope will be an insightful guide for those young physicians about to tread down a path, leading to the start of a wonderful continuation in the  Practice of medicine. It is well known that physicians, especially new graduates, are not always adept in  financial planning and management, contract negotiations, legal matters, and such. Unfortunately, it is not the  objective of residency programs to educate their young trainees to become “business savvy.” I find that  young residents find themselves well educated in the art of being a physician, yet in truth, a vast majority find  themselves in the position of negotiating the type of practice arrangement, finances, and significant legal issues  without an adequate knowledge base.

Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking

Powerful, practical strategies to build a lifetime of resilience, flexibility, and happiness.

Several years ago Dr. Tamar Chansky, one of the nation’s leading clinical experts on children and anxiety disorders, realized that roughly half of the children she sees in her clinical practice exhibit “negative thinking.” These children see only those things that are wrong with themselves, the world, and the future. Distinct from the type of thinking Dr. Chansky encountered in children with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, children who engage in negative thinking supersize their problems: Nothing ever works for me. There’s no point. I give up. This negativity creates emotional hurdles that often hinder children from achieving success and happiness, both now and in the years to come.

Now in this landmark book, Dr. Chansky thoroughly analyzes the underlying causes of children’s negative attitudes and provides numerous strategies to help parents and their children manage negative thoughts, build optimism, and establish emotional resilience. She shows how to buffer kids from disappointment, failure, and frustration by helping them to think more accurately about their problems—to right-size them.

Freeing your Child from Negative Thinking provides parents, caregivers, and clinicians with the tools they need to relieve a child from the burden of these emotional hurdles and to build the positive, confident mindset that will set them on their way to a bright, happy future.

Women in Science Fiction and Fantasy

Works of science fiction and fantasy increasingly explore gender issues, feature women as central characters, and are written by women writers. This book examines women's contributions to science fiction and fantasy across a range of media and genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, film, television, art, comics, graphic novels, and music. The first volume offers survey essays on major topics, such as sexual identities, fandom, women's writing groups, and feminist spirituality; the second provides alphabetically arranged entries on more specific subjects, such as Hindu mythology, Toni Morrison, magical realism, and Margaret Atwood. Entries are written by expert contributors and cite works for further reading, and the set closes with a selected, general bibliography.

Students and general readers love science fiction and fantasy. And science fiction and fantasy works increasingly explore gender issues, feature women as central characters, and are written by women writers. Older works demonstrate attitudes toward women in times past, while more recent works grapple with contemporary social issues. This book helps students use science fiction and fantasy to understand the contributions of women writers, the representation of women in the media, and the experiences of women in society.

Healing the Shame that Binds You

This classic book, written 17 years ago but still selling more than 13,000 copies every year, has been completely updated and expanded by the author.

"I used to drink," writes John Bradshaw,"to solve the problems caused by drinking. The more I drank to relieve my shame-based loneliness and hurt, the more I felt ashamed."

Shame is the motivator behind our toxic behaviors: the compulsion, co-dependency, addiction and drive to superachieve that breaks down the family and destroys personal lives. This book has helped millions identify their personal shame, understand the underlying reasons for it, address these root causes and release themselves from the shame that binds them to their past failures.

Presence: How to Use Positive Energy for Success in Every Situation

Everyone has known the feeling of being present. Babies and toddlers live there almost constantly. Great performers work in this state. Great athletes win in it. Great teachers teach in it. Every great communicator speaks from this place. It is when fully present that we do our best work and make our deepest impression on others. In her years as an acting coach, Patsy Rodenburg has discovered the secrets to that elusive quality actors call 'it'. There are three basic ways human energy moves between people and you can be in any one of the 'three circles' in any situation. In the first, your focus is purely inward, in the third, all your energy is moving outward. In the second you are focused, you give energy out and you receive it. You communicate spontaneously and listen well, you are generous and people are generous in return. And by working on your breath, posture, voice, language, listening skills, focus, courage and trust you can access the second circle on a daily basis. Your work, relationships, spirituality and passions will all benefit.

Sewing For Dummies

Knowing nothing at all about sewing, when I first set out to master the craft I went straight to the big-name references (Singer books and the like) only to find either huge guides overloaded with incomprehensible technical information and impractical advice, or beautifully illustrated books with little or no instructions. I was about to give up the teach-yourself-idea and enroll in some very expensive classes when I chanced upon this book. Amazingly by the time it took me to finish studying it (less than a month) I had not only learned to sew, but had also completed several Halloween costumes that earned the praise and admiration of friends and family.
Written in the friendly Dummies style, illustrated with over 200 pictures, drawings, step-by-step diagrams, humorous icon guides and even hilarious cartoons, this book covers all the fundamentals of sewing from general information for beginners to tips and tricks for experienced sewers.
Through simple, yet detailed, fully cross-referenced, clearly written explanations in plain English, and using proper, well-defined terminology, this reference contains all the basics. It includes assembling a sewing kit; selecting fabrics and threads; understanding and using patterns; working with hems, sleeves, pockets, collars, and closures; sewing for the home; and making repairs and alterations. It also offers some projects to test your acquired knowledge and progress, an appendix listing wonderful sewing resources in the US and on the Web, and a very thorough index for quick check-ups and specific consultations.
Although the author could have been a bit more generous with the step-by-step diagrams, which are barely enough to get you through the instructions, and the projects could have been a bit more attractive, even if that meant sacrificing some of their simplicity, this fun to read, informative guide is still in my mind the best how-to reference available on the fundamentals of sewing, especially for those with no prior experience. The excellent instruction and practical tools and advice presented in this volume are well worth the price.

Genuine Happiness: Meditation as the Path to Fulfillment

Wallace, founder of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies, explores key Buddhist meditation-related concepts that aid the "conquest of our inner obscurations" and "present a path to inner fulfillment and human flourishing." He first examines several particular methods—such as "mindfulness of breathing"—for cultivating shamatha, a state of "meditative quiescence" in which people's capacity for attention is refined and stabilized. They can then use these techniques to make a direct, delusion-free investigation of their own bodies, feelings and thoughts. These insights, in turn, help them nurture hearts of compassion and equanimity and, ultimately, realize more advanced teachings such as cultivating bodhichitta (a "spirit of awakening"), dream yoga and a highly developed meditation technique known as dzogchen. Wallace's discussions are usually clear and helpful (on why meditation works: "sustained, continuous effort can actually reconfigure your brain"), and his questions invite readers to see for themselves if his assertions resonate. Moreover, each chapter contains guided meditations to help readers encounter the teachings more directly. Nevertheless, the text can become dense and self-referential, and if readers miss a particular point early on, the effectiveness of later sections may be lessened. The result is a solid—if advanced—examination of some key Buddhist meditation techniques that will appeal to the serious student more than the casual seeker. (Apr.) Evolution Of Desire: Strategies Of Human Mating

David Buss updates his classic study of the origin of human mating behavior with fascinating new research.

If we all want love, why is there so much conflict in our most cherished relationships? To answer this question, says noted psychologist David Buss, we must look into our evolutionary past. Based on the most massive study of human mating ever undertaken, encompassing more than ten thousand people of all ages from thirty-seven cultures worldwide, The Evolution of Desire is the first book to present a unified theory of human mating behavior.

Now in a revised and updated edition, Buss's classic presents the latest research in the field, including startling new discoveries about the evolutionary advantages of infidelity, orgasm, and physical attractiveness.

Critical Thinking : An Introduction to the Basic Skills

William Hughes' 'Critical Thinking' is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the essential skills required to make strong arguments. Hughes gives a thorough treatment of such traditional topics as deductive and inductive reasoning, logical fallacies and how to spot them, the importance of inference, how to recognise and avoid ambiguity, and how to assess what is or is not relevant to an argument. But he also covers a variety of topics not always treated in books of this sort: special concerns to keep in mind when reasoning about ethical matters; and how the nature of language can affect the structure of an argument. The book gives a lucid treatment of the differences between descriptive and evaluative meaning: one person's freedom fighter is another person's terrorist. Last but not least, 'Critical Thinking' includes a selection of logical paradoxes and puzzles that are as entertaining as they are enlightening. For the third edition a new chapter on criti! cal thinking and the media has been added and the text has been revised and updated throughout.: An Introduction to the Basic Skills

Critical Thinking for Students: How to Assess Arguments and Effectively Present Your Own, 2 Edition

This handbook provides an introduction to the subject of critical thinking, showing A-level and university students how to assess arguments and construct their own for effective presentation. Points are illustrated with typical examples and case studies of argument in action.

Summary: Excellent book
Rating: 5

I purchased this book because I wanted to teach my students how to think critically so they could be better readers, writers, and consumers of information. Critical Thinking for Students is not a hefty tome, but it is hefty in value. It is well written, easy to follow, and presents information with such clarity that students should be able to use it for themselves. I've recommended this book to be used for freshman composition courses, and it should be a staple of every high school and university English course. That's how good it is. The book took a week or so to arrive from the UK, and it is well worth the wait.

Arts: A Science Matter

This book treats arts as part of science, from the unified perspective of Science Matters. It contains 17 chapters, with 18 contributors who are prominent humanists, professional artists, or scientists. It consists of three parts: Part I: Philosophy and History of Arts; Part II: Arts in Action; Part III: Understanding Arts. The book is aimed at both research scholars and lay people, and is unique in two important aspects.

It is probably the first and only book that academic professionals and practicing artists contribute to the same book, as equals, on the common theme of creating and understanding arts. (Artists here include Cristina Leiria whose huge Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy) sculpture is an important landmark in Macau, and the famous movie director, Hark Tsui, who is publishing his first ever article on movie-making). Perhaps more importantly, a new understanding of the origin and nature of art is offered for the first time, which is more convincing than all the other hypotheses put forth in the last two thousand years.

Since 1970, radar, sonar, and other techniques have discovered more than 145 lakes underneath the ice of Antarctica, the largest about the same size as Lake Ontario. Rivers, streams, swamps, and other wetlands also exist, the water remaining liquid because of geothermal heat from below and the weight and insulation of ice from above.
As of 2007, no one had drilled into any of these environments, and the Council was asked for ideas on how to investigate them without contaminating them. The most exciting prospect, of course, is that things are living down there, cut off from the rest of Earth's environment for hundreds of thousands of years.

Book of Love and Pain: Thinking at the Limit With Freud and Lacan

Addresses the limits in treating pain psychoanalytically, and offers a phenomenological description of psychic pain, particularly the pain of a lost loved one.

From the Back Cover

In The Book of Love and Pain, Juan-David Nasio offers the first exclusive treatment of psychic pain in Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic literature. Using insights gained from more than three decades as a practicing psychoanalyst, Nasio addresses the limits faced by the analyst in attempting to think and treat pain psychoanalytically. He suggests that while pain is about separation and loss, psychic pain is intensified by paradoxical overinvestment in the lost loved one. Included are discussions of the pain of mourning, the pain of jouissance, unconscious pain, pain as an object of the drive, pain as a form of sexuality, pain and the scream, and the pain of silence. In offering a phenomenological description of psychic pain, The Book of Love and Pain fills a gaping void in psychoanalytic research and will play an important role in our understanding of the human psyche.

Creative Knowledge Environments: The Influences On Creativity In Research And Innovation

Although there is an ever increasing demand for new technology and innovations in the economy and society in general, we currently know little about the conditions for stimulating creativity in relation to research and innovative activity. This book fills a significant gap in the literature by examining the environmental factors that encourage creative working processes for research and innovation. Uniquely, the book investigates creative environments rather than creative individuals which has been the traditional focus of most previous research. The authors first explain what a creative knowledge environment (CKE) is and then examine the phenomenon in a number of case-studies at the micro, meso and macro-levels. By analysing the conditions and mechanisms conducive to creativity in both private and public institutions, they are able to identify which work environments appear to best stimulate the creation of knowledge. They combine and integrate the previously rather disparate literature on creativity and innovation, and summarise what we know about creativity on the basis of current research in a range of disciplines. They also link their findings to contemporary debates about the knowledge society, the knowledge economy and knowledge management, and address relevant issues in science and technology policy relating to knowledge production and exploitation. The concluding chapter summarises what we now know about CKEs and how best to stimulate them, including a discussion of the policy implications and an agenda for future research. Academics and researchers in the fields of science and technology policy, innovation management and business will welcome this original and insightful book. It will also be a useful reference for policymakers involved in knowledge management, and practitioners in RD departments, universities and knowledge-intensive business sectors.

Art of the Portrait (Masterpieces of European Portrait Painting 1420-1670)

This work sets out to analyze some of the major works of early modern portraiture and takes a close look at 50 major works, including paintings by Jan Van Eyck, Holbein the Younger, Raphael, Mantegna and Botticelli. The portraits presented here are selected exclusively from works executed between the late Middle Ages and the 17th century - for it was then that portraiture came into its own. The portraits themselves have been chosen on the basis of their subjects' rank and profession. The value of this method of selection is its proximity to both the painters' intentions and their patrons' requirements.

The Art of the Portrait focuses on about a 200-year period, from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, during which the genre of painted portraiture flourished. For the first time since classical antiquity, interest in and attention to this type of painting grew. As a consequence, new visual types of portraiturefull length, profiles, groupsemerged, and a wider range of subjects (outside the traditional circle of royalty and clergy) was explored in the canvasses, along with psychological and atmospheric elements. During this heyday innumerable masterpieces were painted by a wealth of different artists. But the 19th century, with the advent of photography and impressionism, among other developments, put an abrupt end to the boom.

The paintings collected in this book include Botticelli's Profile of a Young Woman, in which his subject is draped in a lovely deep-red gown with pearls threaded through her intricately braided hair; Jan van Eyck's The Marriage of Giovanni Arnolfini, which doubled as something of a marriage certificate for the couple, as it attested to the presence of a witness (the artist himself) at the priestless ceremony; and da Vinci's Mona Lisa, arguably the most famous portrait in the world. Works by Poussin, Rembrandt, Titian, Dürer, Raphael, Rubens, Velázquez, and other artists illustrate the highlights of the period. The book itself is an interesting enough survey of some of the greatest portraits ever painted and the artists who created them. But it contains poorly reproduced plates of relatively common paintings and a conventional introductory essay, not to mention overlong annotations that tend to overtake the actual images. Still, The Art of the Portrait has achieved minor notoriety since being cited by David Hockney in The New Yorker (January 31, 2000) as supporting his theory that painters of the 16th century must have relied on optical devices such as the camera lucida to create the near-photographic perfection of the portraits. Tamil Cinema: The Cultural Politics of India's other Film Industry

Previously, the academic study of Indian cinema has focused primarily on Bollywood, despite the fact that the Tamil film industry, based in southern India, has overtaken Bollywood in terms of annual output. This book critically examines the cultural and cinematic representations in Tamil cinema. The chapters outline the cinemas history and distinctive characteristics, and proceed to consider a number of important themes such as gender and the portrayal of women, religion, class, sexuality, cinematic genre and the politics of identity. Throughout, the book manages to link the analysis to wider social, political and cultural phenomena in Tamil and Indian society. As interest in Indian cinema grows across the globe, Tamil Cinema is an exciting contribution to an under-studied field, facilitating a fresh consideration of the existing body of scholarship on Indian cinema.

Forgiveness in Perspective

Amidst the cacophony of claims made about forgiveness, this book serves to aid in an effort to put "forgiveness in perspective." Marieke Smit and Christopher R. Allers have collected here ten essays written by twelve authors from around the world and across the disciplinary spectrum including philosophers, practitioners, psychologists, literary theorists, and prison chaplains. All the essays offer a perspective on forgiveness and put forgiveness in perspective whether by tracing what forgiveness "is," how this religious inheritance is worked out in our secularizing societies, how forgiveness works in our quotidian experience, or a particular manifestation in a particular context such as marriage, prison, or after an abortion, to name a few. The multi-disciplinary character of this book provides a multi-disciplinary appeal as well as a resource to enlarge one's own perspective on this perplexing, enigmatic, and wonderfully complex concept of forgiveness.

Superpower Rivalry in the Indian Ocean: Indian and American Perspectives

The vast, politically turbulent region encompassing the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, forty-two littoral states, and one third of the world's population is one of the most potentially explosive theaters of superpower rivalry. In this study, three American and three Indian authors, reflecting different perspectives and areas of expertise, examine the principal factors that have led to the escalation of superpower tensions in the region: the war in Afghanistan, and its spillover into the Afghanistan-Pakistani borderlands; the Indo-Pakistani nuclear arms race; ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka; the Iran-Iraq war; Islamic fundamentalism; and the rapidly growing military presence of the superpowers in the area. Considering how India's emergence as a military power is influencing superpower and indigenous tensions in the region, the contributors compare Indian, American, and Soviet interests, and offer solutions for current Indian-American disagreements

Genius Explained

The cherished view of genius is that it is a special inborn gift: something mysterious, even miraculous. In Genius Explained, psychologist Michael Howe traces the lives of some exceptionally creative men and women, including Charles Darwin, the Brontë sisters, George Eliot, Michael Faraday, Albert Einstein and the railway inventor George Stephenson. Their biographies reveal how the extraordinary capabilities of these people were clearly rooted in the experiences and opportunities that forged their characters. Eschewing mysticism, Howe's study shows that to be a genius demands a strong sense of direction and an extraordinary degree of commitment, focus, practice, ardous training and drive. Michael J.A. Howe is professor of psychology at the University of Exeter. He is the author of A Teacher's Guide to the Psychology of Learning (Blackwell, 1999) and The Psychology of High Abilities (New York University Press, 1999). Previous paperback edition (1999) 0-521-64968-4

In Genius Explained Michael J. A. Howe addresses the commonly held belief that genius is born not made. Controversially he suggests that genius is not a mysterious and mystical gift but the product of a combination of environment, personality and sheer hard work. The exceptional talents of those we call geniuses are the result of a unique set of circumstances and opportunities but in every case they are pursued and exploited with a characteristic drive, determination and focus which the rest of us rarely show. Michael J. A. Howe develops these ideas through a series of case studies focusing on famous figures such as Charles Darwin, George Eliot, George Stevenson, the Bronte sisters, Michael Faraday and Albert Einstein in this fascinating and accessible book which will be of interest to academics and students of intelligence and the interested lay reader.
